Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson

$11.64

Why I loved this book

I love Thompson because he's a renegade and a true individual...you'll never mistake his writing for anyone else's – and fear and loathing is his masterwork. Plus, you'll laugh your head off....and re-examine society and the status quo all in the same book.

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

$14.24

Why I loved this book

For me, this is some of the most incredible, imaginative, beautiful writing out there...and it's also incredibly funny. Never has there been a main character quite like Ignatius J. Reilly – you love to hate him. Hollywood is always threatening to make this book into a movie but they can never quite figure out how to do it...I love the quote from Jonathan Swift that inspired the title: "When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him." ( Thoughts on Various Subjects, Moral and Diverting )

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

$18.87

Why I loved this book

Hmmm...I'm sensing a trend – I appear to only like books with eccentric main characters. Owen is a very small guy with a very big voice who is certain everything has a meaning. Another trend here, this book can be laugh out loud funny while asking some serious questions.

Candy Girl by Diablo Cody

$12.78

Why I loved this book

The author also wrote the film Juno and while Candy Girl is autobiographical the main character shares the caustic tone and outlook of her pregnant teen in her film. In her book, Cody describes what it's like to go from being a fairly regular middle class girl who had an unremarkable upbringing to being a stripper. It's a glimpse into a world most of us will never experience and it's fascinating (and sometimes really gross!)

I’m with the Band by Pamela Des Barres

$12.37

Why I loved this book

Pamela is the original groupie and she writes all about it with extreme candour. This book offers an amazing glimpse into the music scene in Los Angeles in the late 1960's. It also helps us understand why some girls are so excited to “be with the band”.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

$8.99

Why I loved this book

Not a shocker to include on a favourites list – this book is widely regarded to be an American masterpiece. The writing is superb and while it takes place in the 20's the commentary on unrestrained materialism and excess seems quite appropriate today. This is the second book on my list to question “the American dream”.
